[Truro, NS]—Officials from the province's Department of Agriculture will be in Nappan (Nova Scotia) later this week to look at damage caused by heavy rain over the weekend (July10-11).

More than 90 mm of rain fell across Cumberland County on Saturday and Sunday (July 10-11) washing out road shoulders and causing extensive flooding. It also led to the closure of several county roads and inundated farmers' fields near Amherst.

Alan Grant with the department said, "It was an extraordinary weather event with a tremendous amount of rain," Grant said. "Our land protection group was working on it Sunday for about four hours and I was told today the aboiteau is working. It's just going to take a while for the water to get out."

The department hired an excavator to remove a quantity of logs, branches and other debris blocking the aboiteau on Sunday.

Grant said department officials will be in the area later this week to assess the situation and see if any additional work is required.

"To my knowledge there are no more immediate concerns. Everything seems to be working and once the water comes out of there things will return to normal," he said.
