Highly respected Holstein breeder Arthur Versloot was killed July 19 after his vehicle hit a moose on the highway near Perth-Andover, New Brunswick.
The 42-year-old Keswick Ridge dairy producer and two other farmers were on their way home from a Quebec agricultural event when they encountered the animal. The other men suffered minor injuries.
Police said the vehicle was out of control after striking the moose, crossed the median and landed in a ditch.
Combination Holsteins Ltd., operated by Arthur Versloot and his father, George, is an internationally renowned business and their prize-winning cows garnered ribbons and banners at various exhibitions.
Tim Blom told the Daily Gleaner that his brother-in-law ’”was a devout husband, a terrific father and a farmer through and through.’”
Mr. Versloot was a 4-H leader for many years and served as vice-president of the New Brunswick 4-H Council. He was also an official Holstein Canada judge.
He was also a deacon who sang in the Christian Reformed Church choir and a hardcore Montreal Canadiens fan.
Mr. Versloot is survived by his wife, Karen (Blom) and his four children: daughters, Josie and Hannah; sons, Austin and Alex. He is also survived by his parents George and Gerda (Vanwoudenberg) Versloot; sisters, Margaret Thompson (Ellis) of Keswick, NB, Yvonne Brilman (Andre) of Maple Ridge, NB and Evelyn Bokma (Donald) of Shubenacadie, NS; brothers, Peter (Grace) of London, ON, George of New Maryland, NB and Eric (Marcia) of Island View, NB; several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Versloot’s funeral service was held at the Christian Reformed Church, in Fredericton on July 22. Interment was in the Keswick Cemetery.
