Brackleyfarm Goldwyn Stella sold Friday (Aug. 13) for $160,000 at the Island Heatwave Sale at Eastside Holsteins in Frenchfort. That is the largest amount paid for a cow in an auction in Atlantic Canada, up from a previous high of $52,000, says Boyce Thompson, owner of the Holstein operation.
"She's just a true type cow," said Thompson.
"Everybody that shows cows is looking for her. She is one of the top cows in North America.''
"She is a show cow,'' he added, "and her daughters are going to be worth a lot of money.''
Stella was sold to Gene Iager of Maple Long Farm in Maryland.
Another cow sold for $55,000, also surpassing the previous high for an auction in Atlantic Canada.
During the last annual Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, a cow bred by Thompson at Eastside Holsteins set a new world record for the most expensive cow when she sold at auction for $1.2 million.
