Herb Delorey, the warden of the County of Antigonish, says the town of Antigonish shouldn’t be allowed to go ahead with the forced tax-sale of the exhibition grounds.
The town has said that the county hasn’t paid a tax bill of about $329,000 for the property on James Street.
Delorey says the county has sent a letter to Municipal Services Minister John MacDonnell arguing that the property should never have been taxed in the first place.
He says the county’s only mistake is that it should have appealed back in 2003, when the town sent the first tax assessment notice.
The exhibition grounds property, valued at $1.1 million, is scheduled be sold on Sept. 12.
