It has now sacrificed more than half a million birds in efforts to contain H5N1 avian influenza.

This 10th outbreak was in the Miyazaki prefecture where it is proving difficult to find places to dispose of carcasses. It is the seventh outbreak since Jan. 22 in southwestern Miyazaki Prefecture.

This time there is a 10-kilmetre radius for quarantine barring movement of chickens and eggs out of the area.

About 400 people, including Self-Defence Force troops, are helping in the cull of the 190,000 chickens.

Six of 10 processing plants in the Miyazaki Prefecture have been closed.

''We need to consider offering recompense as generously as possible'' to poultry farmers who had their chickens culled, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries parliamentary secretary Kenko Matsuki said after a meeting with Miyazaki Governor Shunji Kono.
