A strike at a Quebec pork plant isn't having any impact on the slaughter of Ontario hogs.
The 450 workers at Olymel's pork processing and lard plant at St. Hyacinthe walked off the job Oct. 9 after rejecting the company's latest contract proposal that calls for a four-year wage freeze.
In 2005 they took a 20 per cent pay cut to keep the plant open.
While it's good news that the strike isn't impacting hog slaughter by Olymel, the market remains dismal. Prices in Ontario slipped back below $100 per hundredweight early this month, then kept sliding as the Canadian dollar gained strength to above 97 U.S. cents.
As the Americans have to pay more to buy a Canadian dollar, the prices for all Canadian exports need to come down to remain competitive.
