Maple syrup production began in early March on property in Pokiok, New Brunswick being rented by AV Nackawic to Kings Landing Historical Settlement.
"This is an invaluable partnership where everyone involved is a winner," said Alain Boisvert, executive director, Kings Landing. "Together, we can better protect part of our regional heritage and celebrate an incredible treasure."
AV Nackawic has offered to rent its Pokiok Sugary to Kings Landing for $1 a year, allowing the settlement to produce its own maple syrup. The agreement also protects the sugary, which has not been used since 2002.
"We are pleased with the partnership with Kings Landing," said Shankar Ray, president and chief executive officer, AV Nackawic. "The Pokiok Sugary has been given new life, and Kings Landing has worked hard to get this project off the ground. AV Nackawic is proud to have the opportunity to offer this resource back to the community."
With this initiative, AV Nackawic becomes a partner of Kings Landing's sugar bush season and school programming. In 2010, Kings Landing has already tripled the number of students who will learn about the history of maple syrup through its educational field trips. Kings Landing has added a second sugar bush weekend in response to public demand.
The second Sugar Bush weekend was held March 27-28. The York Sunbury Search and Rescue served the traditional pancake breakfast as a fund-raiser.
