Hundreds attended the Rally for Fairness Sunday (Feb. 8) in Kentville (Nova Scotia) in support of workers represented by the Canadian Auto Workers Union (CAW) who will be out of work when Eastern Protein, a subsidiary of ACA Cooperative Limited, closes the doors of the Kentville plant at the end of the month.
Several speakers called for the jobs to be saved or, failing that, for the unionized workers to receive what is owed to them in severance and vacation and sick pay, totaling about $1.3 million.
Pressure is being applied to provincial officials to uphold the remaining $1.5 million of a $3.5 million loan to the poultry processing company so that there will be funds to pay the workers once the plant closes.
