Tryon, PEI -
A section of the Trans-Canada Highway in Tryon (Prince Edward Island) was closed for 12 hours after a tractor-trailer carrying 64,000 pounds of wood pellets overturned late Monday night (Sept. 28).
The accident occurred around 11:30 p.m.
An 18-wheeler Freightliner overturned when the load-a container of wood pellets-shifted.
The container ended up in the ditch. Luckily, the wood pellets didn't spill out.
There were no injuries but extensive damage to the vehicle and the guardrail.
The wood pellets had to be removed from the damaged container to a new container, which took several hours.
The section of highway was closed from 11:30 p.m. Monday to just after 12 noon on Tuesday (Sept. 29). Traffic was diverted during that time by the Department of Highways.
A charge under the Highway Traffic Act was laid.
Speed and size of the load appear to have been contributing factors in the accident.
