For the first time, Islanders in western Prince Edward Island have the opportunity to host and participate in festival events right here.
"It's so exciting to be expanding and to be able to go all across the Island with over 250 events that showcase P.E.I. food, culinary, chefs, farmers and fishers," said Jan Holmes, program officer of Culinary Alliance. "There are certainly a lot of events going on in the western end of the Island that people can attend."
The month-long event kicks off in Abram-Village on Friday with a special visit from chef Michael Smith.
"He will be at the Festin Acadien to launch the festival," Holmes said. "I think he is a great ambassador because he's wonderful at showcasing P.E.I. food."
The second weekend of September will host two major events in the western region.
Smith will also make an appearance at Applelicious, a premiere event held at Arlington Orchards on Saturday, Sept. 11. There will be an apple pie eating contest, wagon rides and many other apple-related activities. Grass Mountain Hobos will perform and there will be a mussel and corn boil to end the afternoon.
Lobster Boil on the Pier will be held on Sunday, Sept. 12 at the Northport Pier in Cascumpec. Lobster, corn, mussels and dessert will be served and local entertainment will be provided.
Clam diggers will go head-to-head the following weekend on Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Expo Centre in Abram Village. Local experts will create unique dishes with juicy P.E.I. bar clams as they compete for the Best Bar Clam Award. There will be vendors selling local produce and everyone is welcome to sample the clammy contest entries.
Other western events include Husking the Harvest at Green Park Shipbuilding Museum on Sept. 6 and 10, Lobster Secrets Savoured at the Expo Centre in Abram Village on Sept. 4 and 5, Bread, Butter and Jam at Wyatt Heritage in Summerside on Sept. 7 and 11 and Ice Cream Chills and Thrills at Wyatt Heritage in Summerside on Sept. 8 and 9.
"Along with our major events we have a ton of little events across the Island," said Holmes. "You can learn how to make potato fudge at the potato museum in O'Leary, you can learn how to make bread from scratch in Summerside, there's so many events happening."
