Jack Ferguson, chairman of the Pictou-North Colchester Agricultural Society, said the exhibition has been an important social event in the community for more than a century and offers people an opportunity to meet the people driving the agricultural industry.
"It was the gathering place for agriculture in the fall of the year," said Ferguson. "It is hard to maintain that image as society has changed so much of the years but agriculture continues to be one of its main focuses."
Today is 4-H day and will begin at 8 a.m. with draft horse mane and tail braiding.
Throughout the day there will be several 4-H demonstrations from rabbits to poultry, beef, horse, dairy, vegetable and much more.
The exhibition will officially open at 7:15 p.m. followed by a performance from Frank, Jessie Hart and Friend and the princess pageant at 9 p.m.
Today in the outside show ring there will be a number of draft horse events.
"One of our biggest features is the heavy draft horses," said Ferguson. "It's one of the largest exhibits in the province."
A wide variety of draft horse events are planned throughout the exhibition.
Along with many traditional favourites, the truck pull will return to the exhibition this year on Friday night, there will be lots of live musical entertainment every evening, and the Seniors Tug-Of-War challenge will also be back with a number of women's teams this year.
Other highlights throughout the four-day long event include the demolition derby, young stars talent competition, firemen's event, an ATV obstacle course and ATV pull, strongman and woman competitions, antique tractor parade and oxen pull demonstration.
