Nicnat strawberry fields opened a u-pick business in Lorneville (Nova Scotia) for the first time on Monday (July 4).
“We started this because there’s none around,” said Nathan Greeno who came up with the idea to have his family grow strawberries. “It looked like a good business opportunity for us. We like strawberries ourselves and we couldn’t find any.”
“Mom likes doing jams and stuff like that and I mean, for ourselves, we couldn’t get any berries,” said Greeno. “We used to have a row in the garden and now it’s expanded into three acres.”
Nathan said starting their own business was a little tough, but they are proud to say they are all natural.
“It’s a lot of work, it’s a lot of manual labour. We didn’t spray any of the berries so all the weeds and stuff were picked by hand. It took four people at least one day a week to just pull weeds out of this patch. We’re pretty proud of how clean it is and how many berries we have this year.”
