[Waterville, NS]— A Nova Scotia man has set a new record for the heaviest pumpkin grown in Atlantic Canada.

Gerard Ansems of Steam Mill entered a 727-kilogram specimen Saturday at the Annapolis Valley Giant Vegetable Growers Association weigh-off in Waterville.

The monster is 89 kilograms heavier than the previous record holder, a 638-kilogram pumpkin grown by Jeff Reid in 2010.

The association’s prize for winning the club competition is $300, less than the $1,000 up for grabs this Saturday at the Great Atlantic Weigh-off in Windsor.

Ansems says he has another pumpkin he thinks is even heavier, based on the measurements.

Ansems’ previous largest pumpkin was 549-kilograms, two years ago.
