Jarvis, Ontario - When Hans Veurink moved from dairy farming near Thunder Bay to take up egg farming here eight years ago, he was vexed by the time and effort to clean up the water and gunk after he had washed the barn.
He recalls telling his wife he had to find a better way before he had to do it all again next year.
That prompted him to invent a blade with a rubber-like edge thats pushed by a tractor.
It worked so well that he told neighbours and when they saw and tried it, they urged him to start making and selling them.
They suggested he take it to the London Poultry Show, but it was his wife who took the initiative and found that a booth could be rented at the show and she urged him to try it.
The reception was enthusiastic.
A friend strongly suggested he enter his invention in the competition for the Premiers Award for Innovation. He won.
From there it kind of snowballs, Veurink said. For something so simple.
He was honoured again during the Poultry Innovation Conference at Bingeman Park in Kitchener.
But when he was called upon to speak, he spent more time talking about teaching Eric Staal, the oldest of the NHL-playing hockey brothers, as part of a church class of cadets, than he did about his Blade Mount Squeegee.
